Community Members Rally Behind Chief Trent Norton and Officer Kyle Crow Ahead of Tonight's Executive Session
MEEKER, Okla. — As the Meeker Board of Trustees prepares to meet in Executive Session tonight to discuss personnel matters involving Chief Trent Norton and Officer Kyle Crow, Market Meeker has begun receiving letters from residents sharing their personal experiences with the two officers.
While the Board has not publicly discussed the evidence or personnel matters that will be considered during tonight's meeting, many residents have reached out to express support for the officers and the impact they believe the two men have had on the community.
One longtime Meeker resident, who has known Chief Norton for many years, described him as "the best Chief of Police Meeker has ever had."
The resident recalled Chief Norton taking time to encourage a reluctant student to attend school and said he consistently acknowledged local children around town, regardless of what he was doing.
The same resident also described Officer Crow stopping to assist a stranded teenager on the side of the road and later responding with professionalism and compassion following a serious automobile accident involving a family member.
«"We need more of them, not less of them, especially in a small town," the resident wrote.»
Another letter, submitted by Kala Skillett, focused on the relationships the officers have built within the community.
Skillett wrote that her four-year-old grandson was excited—not frightened—when his mother was stopped by Officer Crow because he viewed local officers as protectors and friends.
She also recalled a late-night medical emergency at her home when Officer Crow remained with her and her aunt until EMSA arrived.
«"Their presence provided an immense sense of safety during a terrifying ordeal. I will forever be grateful for their professionalism and genuine care during that crisis," she wrote.»
Another lifelong Meeker resident echoed those sentiments.
«"These two officers are a credit to law enforcement... Their dedication to our safety and the safety of our children is unmatched. I've lived in Meeker all 42 of my years and I've never ever seen it done better."»
As of this morning, the Board has not publicly released the records or evidence it will consider during tonight's Executive Session. Market Meeker has submitted multiple requests under the Oklahoma Open Records Act seeking records related to Officer Crow's suspension, the reported grievance filed afterward, applicable employee policies, and other documents that may provide additional context.
At the time of publication, those records have not yet been released.
Market Meeker will attend tonight's meeting and report any public action taken by the Board following Executive Session.
